BSituated
about 65km. SE of Junagarh district in state of
Gujrat in South West India, the Gir National Park
was established on 18th Septembar of 1965, as a
Forest Reserve, primarily to conserve the Asiatic
lion - classified as one the world's threatened
species. Now Gir National Park is the only remaining
place in the world, where one is likely to see the
Asiatic Lion.

The
1412.13 sq-km per has a rugged terrain and the steep
rocky hillsides are covered with mixed deciduous
forests. Apart from lion other prominent fauna of
the area includes leopards, wild ass, numerous
chetal, nel ghai, chinkara, four horned antelope,
wild boar, numerous birds like paradise flycatcher,
Bonneli's eagle, ciested sertent eagle, wood peckers
flamingo etc.
With
in the sanctuary their are numerous human
settlements of cattle herders called Malbharis with
an estimated 20,000 of livestock (which,
incidentally, forms a significant part of lion's
died) Their are also places of Hindu worship and and
pilgrimage and sulphur springs at Tulsi, Shyam and
Kankai Mata. The adges of the park have good
population of Indian Gazelle, protected by religious
sentiments of the locale people.

Wildlife

A
distinct belt of vegetation is
found along the main rivers and strums.
Spacies like the Jambu, Karanj, Umro, Vad,
Kalam, Charal, Sirus and Amli are mainly found
here. These trees are mostly broad leaved and
evergreen, giving the area a cool shade and
moisture content. Finally, Prosopis and
Casuarina have beens planet a in the postal
borders as part of the afforestation plan.

Gir
samctuary is the last and only home of the
critically endangered Asiatic Lion. This lions
are a smaller more compact version of their
African counters parts and are best viewed at
danwn or dusk when they are on the move. The
major difference between the two is that the
African Lion appears larger than the Indian
lion because of its large and luxurient mane.

Leopard
is considered to be one of the most beautiful
and graceful animals in the jungle, also the
most dangerous own. Popularity known as the
Prince of cats, these animal is the most
adaptable among the predators, own of the
reasons why it occupies a much larger spread
of Gujarat forest cover. In the Gir National
Park it is found in all the varied habitats
and vegetation types. The approximates
population of 210 leopards resides within the
sanctuary area.

The
forest is also rich in bird life, with an
estimated 300 species in habiting the Gir
National Park. Many wildlife experts believe
that had Gir not being a lion sanctuary, it
could have easily passed of as a protected
area for the inscrutable diversity of birds
that it harbors. The avivauna here occupies
the forest closed, small plants and shrubs and
even the canopy of the trees. The Paradise
Flycatcher, Black Headed Cuckoo Shrike, Pied
Woodpecker, Bonelli's Eagle, Creset Serpant
Eagle, Panted Sanbgrouse, Bush Quail and Gray
Patrige are the commonly found varieties in
the part.

Wildlife
enthusiasts can visit Gir National Park
throughout the year, but the best period to
visit the Gir Sanctuary is between the months
of November and June.
