Welcome to the tribal land of Orissa. Orissa is a state that is popular for its world famous temples, pristine beaches, intriguing festivals and fairs, distinct tribal traditions and arts and crafts that are unique in technique and design.
There are more than 62 different tribal communities in Orissa which are still deeply etched in their traditions and customs despite modernization at its peak in the rest of the state. Visit to some of the tribal villages and participate in their dance and festival on a full moon night. The tribal people continue to reside in deep jungles and forests with food gathering, hunting and fishing as the main source of their livelihood .

Population and Tribes 

One fourth of the total population in Orissa constitutes of  Tribal Population. 118 blocks have more than 50% of Tribal population and have been declared as tribal sub plan area.

They construct their knowledge through their mother tongue. The Santal, Munda, Ho, Saora, Kishan, Khadia, Didayi, Gadaba, Bhumia, Paroja, Mundari, Kuvi, Kui, Bonda, Juang, Kutia, Dongria, Kondh, and Bhunjia from the major ethnic tribes.

Heritage and Culture

 

The tribal people express their cultural identity and unique in their society, language, rituals and festivals and also in their dress, ornaments, art and craft.

Among the tribes there are religious functionaries who cater to their spiritual needs. On the Occasion of performing Pujas and observance of festivals the song sung are different. Such songs are adopted from the past so many years. These songs describe the history of gods, the process of creation and some epic stories.

The tribal women in general and the Bondo, the Gadaba and the Dongaria, Kondh woman in particular are very fond of using ornaments. Some of the tribal communities have their own rooms by which they weave their clothes for own use.
